Ordering Inpatient Medications for Outpatient (Orders tab)

Take the following steps to write IMO (inpatient medications for outpatients) orders:

1.     Select the Orders tab.

2.     From the Write Orders pane, select Meds, Inpatient. CPRS prompts you to select a location for current activities.

Note:      Depending on how menus are set up at your particular site, you may need to select a different option from the Write Orders pane. Check with your site’s Clinical Application Coordinator (CAC) (or the person who manages information resources at your site) to find out which Write Orders selection provides a complete list of inpatient medications.

3.     Select a scheduled current or future appointment in an authorized hospital/clinic location, or create a new visit by selecting an authorized hospital/clinic location and accepting the default time (NOW). CPRS displays a comprehensive list of available inpatient medications.

Note:      If you select a hospital location that is not authorized for IMO orders, or if the patient does not meet the criteria delineated above, CPRS displays a list comprised only of IV (injectable) inpatient medications.

CPRS allows you to change your clinic selection after you have started an order. However, if you are in the process of placing an order and change clinic locations midstream, CPRS does not reflect this change in the finished order. For example, suppose you are in the process of placing an inpatient medication order for an outpatient using an authorized clinic. Now suppose you change your mind and select instead a clinic that is not authorized for placing these orders. CPRS finishes your order as an inpatient medication order for an outpatient using the authorized clinic. If you are in the process of placing an inpatient medication order for an outpatient from an unauthorized clinic, then change the location to an authorized clinic, CPRS does not display a complete list of inpatient (unit-dose and IV) medications. Instead, it continues to display the list of injectable inpatient medications available for the unauthorized clinic. Furthermore, CPRS does not reflect this clinic change in the finished order.

4.     Select a medication.

Once the name is selected, CPRS displays a second dialog to select the items for the rest of the order. In the top field of the second dialog, the generic medication name and the synonym (usually a brand name) are displayed.

5.     Follow the appropriate instructions for completing simple- or complex-dose medication orders that appear in the topic Ordering Inpatient Medications.

This screen capture shows the Orders
tab with the Clinic Orders category highlighted.

On the Orders tab, CPRS displays IMO orders under the Clinic Orders display group, with the ordering location in the Location column.
