============================================================================= Run Date: AUG 25, 2022 Designation: PXRM*2*78 Package : PXRM - CLINICAL REMINDERS Priority: Mandatory Version : 2 SEQ #63 Status: Released Compliance Date: SEP 25, 2022 ============================================================================= Associated patches: (v)PXRM*2*71 <<= must be installed BEFORE `PXRM*2*78' (v)DG*5.3*1071 <<= must be installed BEFORE `PXRM*2*78' Subject: SEXUAL ORIENTATION Category: - Routine - Other Description: ============ The purpose of this patch is to provide support for the prompting of Sexual Orientation in the Computerized Patient Record System (CPRS) Graphical User Interface (GUI). This patch will include the clinical reminder definition and dialog that will be used to document sexual orientation in CPRS. The Joint Commission now mandates services for lesbian, gay, and bisexual Veterans, but the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) cannot identify these patients or what their clinical needs are via the current database. The addition of this field would allow VA to track service utilization and health outcomes. This patch, along with the addition of the new fields, released in DG*5.3*1059, provides the changes necessary to prompt the CPRS user for the Veteran's sexual orientation which then updates in the PATIENT file (#2), which then sends the information to the VA Master Person Index (VA MPI). To fully support this change in CPRS, there will be a multi-package build consisting of PXRM*2.0*78, OR*3.0*558, and GMTS*2.7*141. Veterans Health Administration (VHA) policy on the lesbian, gay, and bisexual population is currently being developed. At present we cannot identify the number of lesbian, gay, and bisexual Veterans enrolled in VA or what their clinical needs are. Such a field would allow VA to know the prevalence of enrolled lesbian, gay, bisexual, and heterosexual identified Veterans in VA. VA could track service utilization and health outcomes based on sexual orientation identity and could design clinical programs to address health disparities experienced by lesbian, gay, and bisexual Veterans. Inclusion of this information as a demographic field is the current trend in non-VA healthcare systems. The Joint Commission now mandates services for lesbian, gay, and bisexual Veterans, but VA cannot identify the number of lesbian, gay, and bisexual Veterans or what their clinical needs are via current databases.
