Default Number of Open Sockets on a Windows 95 or Windows 98 Desktop

If an application encounters an exception with the message No available buffer space, the problem may be caused by the desktop exceeding the maximum number of open sockets configured for Windows 95 or Windows 98. The number of sockets available is set by a Windows Registry key, and can be changed to allow greater socket usage. Running any of the Vergence modules requires open sockets, as does the simultaneous use of other applications.

To correct the problem, the string value noted below must be added if it is not present. Use the Windows regedit.exe program to change the value of the MaxConnections key within the Windows Registry. The default value of MaxConnections is 100, and is of type string. Change the string value to 300 or higher. The MaxConnections value entry is located in:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VxD\MSTCP

After making the change, you must restart the computer.

Shortcuts for Vergence Locator on Multiple-User Desktops

The Vergence Locator provides an implementation of the CCOW-specific Context Management Registry and serves as a bridge to COM-based Mapping Agents. When the Vergence Locator is installed, a shortcut is created in the user's startup menu to start the Locator when the user logs in. If the computer on which you install the Vergence Locator is accessed by multiple users, it may be necessary to create additional shortcuts for each of those users.

This can be accomplished in a variety of ways depending upon the users' needs and the type of operating system. Your system administrator should be able to create the necessary shortcut, by copying the shortcut that was created during the installation process.

Desktop Components Installation

When installing the Desktop Components, the Back button doesn't work correctly from the screen where you choose whether to install the Citrix/WTS option.  Selecting Back moves you forward, as if you had pressed the Next button. To work around this problem, press Cancel and start again.

Configuring Citrix ICA to Reset on Disconnect

Disconnected Citrix sessions are not supported, so you must configure Citrix to reset a connection on disconnect. The two procedures to do this are described in Chapter 3, "Vergence Products in a Citrix Environment" of the Vergence Desktop Components Installation Guide.

Address in Use Error

In a Citrix environment, a request to the Vault could fail with the error "Address in use." If this occurs, it can be fixed by creating the following new DWORD value in the registry key \HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters:

Name: TcpTimedWaitDelay

Type: REG_DWORD

Value: 0x1E

The TcpTimedWaitDelay key tells Windows how long to wait before cleaning up resources after a socket has been closed. The range of valid values for this key is 0x1E (30 seconds) to 0x12C (300 seconds). Using a shorter wait time will keep Windows from running out of resources and thereby avoid the "Address in use" error.
